Life and Career
Abby Epstein began her career in theater. She had her own production company called Roadworks Productions. This company was based in Chicago and started in 1992. Roadworks Productions was very successful in the mid-1990s.
After directing plays in Chicago, Abby moved to New York. There, she worked as an assistant director for the musical Rent. She then worked on a play with Eve Ensler.
Epstein directed her first documentary film, Until the Violence Stops. This film looked at how a play about stopping violence against women had a big impact around the world. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004. The film later won an Emmy Award after being shown on Lifetime.
Five years after Until the Violence Stops, Abby Epstein released The Business of Being Born in 2008. This film first showed at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007. It was then released in movie theaters in 2008.
In October 2018, Epstein released another documentary called Weed the People. She worked on this film for six years. It was about young children with serious illnesses. The film explored how families tried to get special care for their sick children. Ricki Lake was an executive producer for this film.
