Datuk Abdullah Hussain (born March 25, 1920 – died December 31, 2014) was a famous Malaysian writer. He wrote many novels and stories. In 1996, he received the Malaysian National Laureate award. This is a very special award given to top writers in Malaysia. He was the eighth person to get this honor.
Growing Up
Abdullah Hussain was born in a place called Sungai Limau Dalam, Yan, Kedah. This was on March 25, 1920. He started school at Sekolah Melayu Sungai Limau from 1926 to 1931. Later, he went to Sekolah St. Michael Alor Setar from 1932 to 1933. He also studied at the Anglo Chinese School in Alor Setar until 1935.
His Journey as a Writer
Abdullah Hussain began his working life in 1939. He worked as an assistant cashier in the mining industry in Pahang. In the same year, he moved to Penang. There, he started working for a newspaper called Sahabat.
During his time at Sahabat, he published two of his own writings. These were titled Binti Penghulu and Harta Dan Jodoh Menanti di England. From 1940 to 1941, Abdullah worked for another newspaper called Saudara. He was an assistant writer there. He also released two novels during this period: Kasih Isteri and Dia...Kekasihku.
Awards and Recognition
Abdullah Hussain received several important awards for his writing. These awards showed how much his work was valued.
- 1981: He won the S.E.A. Write Award. This award celebrates talented writers in Southeast Asia.
- 1992/1994: He received the Hadiah Novel Nasional. This was a national novel prize from Syarikat Utusan Melayu and Public Bank Berhad.
- 1994/1995: He won the Hadiah Sastera Malaysia for his novel Imam. This is a Malaysian literary award.
- 1995: He was given the Pingat Jasa Hukom Ngon Adat Lembaga Adat Kebudayaan Aceh (LAKA) and the Hadiah Sako.
- 1996: He received the highest literary award in Malaysia, the Sasterawan Negara (National Laureate). He also received the Darjah Dato' Setia Diraja Kedah (DSDK) and Darjah Kebesaran Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN).
Passing Away
Abdullah Hussain passed away on December 31, 2014. He was 94 years old. He died at his home in Section 17, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. He was buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery in Kuala Lumpur.
