Life and Career
Becoming a Lawyer
Abdullahi Ibrahim became a lawyer in England in 1963. He then became a lawyer in Nigeria in 1964. He worked as a legal advisor for the old Northern Region of Nigeria.
In 1973, he started his own law firm. It was called Abdullahi Ibrahim and Company. He also advised and later led the New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC).
In 1982, he became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). This is a special title for experienced lawyers. He was the first person from Northern Nigeria to receive this honor. He also led the Body of Benchers until 2001. This group oversees legal professionals in Nigeria.
Government Roles
Abdullahi Ibrahim held several important positions in the Nigerian government. He was the Federal Minister of Education, Science, and Technology.
From 1984 to 1985, he served as the Minister for Transport and Aviation. This was during the time General Muhammadu Buhari was in charge.
Later, from 1997 to May 1999, he was the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. This means he was Nigeria's chief legal officer. He held this role under General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
International Work
Ibrahim was also part of the International - National Boundary Commission. He helped Nigeria negotiate important agreements with other countries.
He worked on a treaty about sea borders with Equatorial Guinea. He also helped with an agreement about oil fields. He represented Nigeria in a border dispute with Cameroon. This case was heard at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
His Passing
Abdullahi Ibrahim died on January 24, 2021. He passed away from COVID-19. This happened during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.
