Discovering Abergavenny Museum
The idea for a museum in Abergavenny started early in the 1900s. However, it wasn't until the late 1950s that people really began to make it happen. At that time, parts of old Abergavenny were being rebuilt. During this work, many interesting old items and archaeological finds were discovered.
Local people realized these important objects needed a safe home. They wanted to make sure these pieces of history weren't lost. Thanks to the hard work of local volunteers, the museum was set up in its current spot. It became a place to keep and display all these amazing finds.
What Can You See at the Museum?
The museum has a fantastic collection of items that tell the story of the local area.
Exploring Local History
- You can see old photographs that show how the town and landscape used to look.
- There are archaeological finds from the Roman fort of Gobannium. These were found when a new Post Office was built in the 1960s.
- Even older items are on display, dating back to the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age), Bronze Age, and Iron Age. These include ancient axe heads and arrow heads.
- You can also find objects from the medieval and Tudor periods.
Step Back in Time
The museum also features special displays that let you imagine life in the past:
- A Welsh kitchen from the 1890s, showing how people cooked and lived.
- A saddler's shop, which made saddles for horses, from the early 1900s.
- Basil Jones' old grocer's shop, brought from Abergavenny town. It shows what a local shop looked like long ago.
- The museum also holds important collections linked to famous local figures like Father Ignatius and Lady Llanover.
