The Abergavenny Museum is a cool place to visit in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, which is in south east Wales. It's located right inside the grounds of the old Abergavenny Castle.
The museum building itself is pretty special. It's in a square tower, sometimes called a 'keep', which was once a hunting lodge. This lodge was built way back in 1819 for the Marquess of Abergavenny. From the castle grounds, you can see the beautiful River Usk and Castle Meadows. The museum is also very close to the centre of Abergavenny town.

Discovering Abergavenny's Past
People started talking about having a museum in Abergavenny early in the 1900s. But the real work to create it began in the late 1950s. At that time, parts of the old town were being rebuilt. During this work, many interesting old items and archaeological finds were discovered.
Local people realized these important pieces of history could be lost forever. They wanted to make sure there was a safe place for them. So, volunteers from the community worked hard to set up the museum exactly where it is today. Thanks to them, we can now learn all about Abergavenny's history!
What You Can See at the Museum
The Abergavenny Museum has a fantastic collection of objects that tell the story of the local area. Here are some of the things you might see:
- Old Photographs: Pictures showing what the town and countryside looked like a long time ago.
- Ancient Finds: Items found when the new Post Office was built in the 1960s. This area was once a Roman fort called Gobannium.
- Prehistoric Tools: Even older finds from the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age), Bronze Age, and Iron Age. These include things like ancient axe heads and arrowheads.
- Medieval and Tudor Items: Objects from the medieval period and the Tudor period, giving a peek into life centuries ago.
- Old Shops: The museum has recreated parts of old shops! You can see a Welsh kitchen from the 1890s, a saddler's shop from the early 1900s, and even Basil Jones' old grocer's shop from Abergavenny town.
- Special Collections: There are also important collections linked to famous local figures like Father Ignatius and Lady Llanover.
Learning with Schools
Abergavenny Museum works closely with local schools. They offer many different workshops for students. These workshops help kids learn about various historical topics. For example, you can learn about the Celts and Romans who lived in the area. You can also explore what life was like in a Victorian kitchen. It's a great way to make history come alive!
