A Look Back in Time
Early Days and Owners
The land where Aberuchill Castle stands was given to the Campbell family of Lawers in 1596. The oldest part of the castle, the tower house, was built around 1602. In 1642, Sir James Drummond bought Aberuchill. His family owned the castle until 1858. The Drummonds added the gothic east wing to the tower house. They also updated the inside of the castle in the early 1800s.
Changes and New Additions
In 1858, Sir David Dundas of Dunira bought the house. He then sold it to George Dewhurst in 1864. Mr. Dewhurst was a cotton merchant from England. Between 1869 and 1874, more parts were added to the castle. This included a new west wing. These changes might have been designed by David Bryce.
A Fire and New Beginnings
On February 4, 1914, Aberuchill Castle had a fire. This happened during a time when women were fighting for the right to vote. The castle's staff were lucky to get out safely.
After the fire, the castle was passed down through families. William Mostyn-Owen inherited it in 1947. He lived there with his wife, Gaia Servadio. They lived in one part of the castle, which had about 23 rooms. Later, he sold the castle.
The Dewhurst family sold the estate in the 1980s. Aberuchill Castle is still owned by private individuals today. In 2005, it was reported that Vladimir Lisin bought the castle. He is a steel businessman from Russia. He bought the castle and its 3,000-acre estate for £6.8 million.
