The Aboriginal Shire of Cherbourg is a special local government area in Queensland, Australia. It's a place where the local government helps manage the community.
In 2021 census, the Aboriginal Shire of Cherbourg had a population of 1,194 people. This means that 1,194 people lived there at that time.
Geography
The Aboriginal Shire of Cherbourg is completely surrounded by the South Burnett Region. This means it's like an island of land within another larger area. The main town in this shire is also called Cherbourg.
History
The name Cherbourg comes from an old farm name from the 1840s. It's believed to be a slightly changed version of Chirbury, a town in Shropshire, England. This English town was the birthplace of Richard Jones. He was a farmer who leased the land in the 1850s.
People and Community
In 2006 census, about 1,241 people lived in the shire. This made it Queensland's third largest Aboriginal community at the time. The town is on the traditional lands of the 'Wakka Wakka' (Waka Waka) people. However, many different Aboriginal clan groups also live there, including 'Gubbi Gubbi' (Kabi Kabi) people. A sign at the entrance to the town says "Many Tribes, One Community." This shows how different groups live together.
Most homes in Cherbourg are stand-alone houses. Many people in the community work hard. Some people work part-time, and some are looking for more job opportunities.
In 2016 census, the population of the Aboriginal Shire of Cherbourg was 1,269 people. By 2021 census, the population was 1,194 people.
Mayors
The mayor is the leader of the local government. They help make decisions for the community.
