Aboud Jumbe Mwinyi: A Leader in Zanzibar
Aboud Jumbe Mwinyi was born in Zanzibar in 1920. He became a significant figure in Zanzibar's politics. He held several important jobs. These included being the chairman of the Revolutionary Council. He was also the Vice-President of the Union of Tanzania.
Becoming President of Zanzibar
After the first president, Abeid Karume, passed away in 1972, Jumbe was chosen to lead Zanzibar. He became the second President of Zanzibar on April 11, 1972. He was first elected by the Revolutionary Council. At that time, he was part of the Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP).
Big Changes in Tanzania's Politics
While Aboud Jumbe was president, a major political event happened in 1977. The two main ruling parties in Tanzania decided to join together. These were the Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP) from Zanzibar and the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) from mainland Tanzania. They merged to create a new, powerful party called Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). This new party became the main ruling party in Tanzania. Jumbe also became the vice-chairman of this new CCM party.
New Rules for Zanzibar
In 1979, President Jumbe introduced a new set of rules for Zanzibar. This was the first constitution for Zanzibar after the Zanzibar Revolution. This new constitution made important changes. It clearly separated the powers of the Revolutionary Council and the House of Representatives. This meant different groups had different jobs.
The new constitution also brought in a new way to choose leaders. Before, leaders were chosen by the Revolutionary Council. But with the new constitution, elections were held where everyone could vote. This is called universal suffrage, meaning all adult citizens could vote.
Later Life
Aboud Jumbe Mwinyi served as president of Zanzibar until January 30, 1984. He passed away at the age of 96. He died at his home in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on August 14, 2016.
