Above Diamond facts for kids
Above Diamond, also known as AD, is a super tall tree called a giant sequoia. It lives in the Atwell Mill Grove inside Sequoia National Park in California. This amazing tree was named "Above Diamond" by nature experts Dennis Coggins, Wendell D. Flint, and Michael M. Law. They named it because it's located uphill from another giant sequoia named Diamond. Above Diamond is the second biggest tree in its grove. It's also one of the largest giant sequoias on Earth, ranking as the 24th largest in the whole world. It might even be the 23rd largest, depending on how much another tree, Ishi Giant, changed after a big fire in 2015.
Where is Above Diamond Located?
Above Diamond is found about 0.65 miles (1.05 kilometers) north-northwest of Mineral King Road. It's also about 0.3 miles (0.48 kilometers) northeast of the Diamond tree. To reach Above Diamond, you need to hike quite a bit uphill through the forest. This kind of hiking, where there are no clear paths, is called cross-country hiking.
