Abraham Haywood's Life and Work
Abraham Haywood likely moved to Lincoln around 1720. He probably learned his building skills from another famous architect. This was Francis Smith of Warwick. One of Abraham's first big projects might have been working on St Peter at Arches Church, Lincoln.
In 1736, he designed a large house called Disney Place. This house was for the Disney family. It is located on Eastgate Street in Lincoln. Later, in 1744, he built the Lincoln Assembly Rooms. This building was used for social gatherings and events. It is in the Bail area of Lincoln. Abraham also built a house for himself. It was near the St Peter at Arches churchyard.
The Hayward Family in Architecture
Abraham's younger brother, John Hayward (1708–1778), was a mason. A mason is someone who builds with stone. John also came to Lincoln with Abraham. After Abraham's death, John continued the family business. In 1753, John rebuilt St Mary's bridge in Lincoln.
The family's connection to architecture continued for generations. John Hayward's grandson, William Hayward, became very important. He became the surveyor for Lincoln Cathedral. This was a very important job in the city.
