Abraham Danielsz. Hondius (born around 1631 – died 17 September 1691) was a talented painter from the Dutch Golden Age. This was a special time in Dutch history when art, science, and trade were very important. Hondius was best known for his amazing paintings of animals. His father, Daniel Abramsz de Hondt, worked as a stonemason in the city.
Early Life and Training
Abraham Hondius was born in the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He learned how to paint from two well-known artists: Pieter de Bloot and Cornelis Saftleven. These teachers helped him develop his skills.
Hondius lived in Rotterdam until 1659. After that, he moved to Amsterdam, another big city in the Netherlands.
What He Painted
Throughout his career, Hondius tried out different painting styles. He became especially good at painting animals. More than two-thirds of his artworks, including paintings, drawings, and etchings (a type of printmaking), show animals.
He often painted exciting scenes like:

His last known painting was Ape and Cat Fighting over Dead Poultry, which he finished in 1690. Abraham Hondius passed away in London on September 17, 1691.
