Abu Yahya Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abi Imran al-Tinmalali facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Abu Yahya Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abi Imran al-Tinmalali was an important Muslim leader. He was the very last ruler of Majorca before it was conquered by a Christian king. People also knew him as Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Mussa. In some old Christian writings, he was called Abu Iehie or Aboheihe.

His name, al-Tinmalali, tells us where he came from. He was from a place called Tinmel in Morocco. This city was once the capital of the Almohad Caliphate, a powerful empire. Abu Yahya belonged to an Arab tribe called Dawasir, which came from the Najd region.

Abu Yahya's Rule in Majorca

In 1208, Abu Yahya became the ruler, or Vali, of Majorca. He was the last of the Almohad Valis sent from Marrakech. Majorca is a large island in the Balearic Islands.

Abu Yahya made Majorca almost like its own small kingdom. He still formally reported to the Almohad emir (a type of ruler). But he had a lot of power over Majorca and the other Balearic Islands. He ruled in the name of the Almohad Empire for many years.

The Conquest of Majorca

Abu Yahya's rule ended in 1229. That year, James I of Aragon, a Christian king, conquered Majorca. This event is known as the conquest of Majorca. It was a major change for the island.

What Happened to His Son?

Abu Yahya had a young son. When Majorca was conquered, his son was only three years old. King James I took the boy and had him baptized. This means the boy became a Christian.

He was given the names of his father and his godfather. He became known as Jaime de Gotor. In 1250, he was given important titles. He became the first Baron of Gotor and the first Baron of Illueca. Jaime de Gotor married a woman named Elvira Roldán. They started a new family line with the surname Gotor.
