Tinmel (also called Tin Mal) is a small village hidden high in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco. It's about 100 kilometers (62 miles) away from the big city of Marrakesh. This quiet village was once a very important place. It was the starting point for a powerful group called the Almohads. The Almohads began their important military actions from here in the early 12th century. They fought against another group called the Almoravids.
Tinmel's History
When the Almohads took control of Marrakesh in 1147, Tinmel became their spiritual capital. This meant it was the most important religious and artistic center for the Almohad Caliphate. A caliphate is like a large Islamic empire ruled by a caliph.
The village of Tinmel is also special because it holds the tombs of the Almohad rulers. These were the leaders of the Almohad empire. During this time, Tinmel was very rich. They even made their own money, called the Almohad dirham, right there in the village. This showed how strong their economy was.
The Tinmal Mosque
The Tinmal Mosque is a famous mosque located in the High Atlas mountains of North Africa. It was built in 1156. The mosque was created to honor Mohamed Ibn Tumart, who was the founder of the Almohad dynasty. A dynasty is a line of rulers from the same family.
This mosque is one of only two mosques in Morocco that people who are not Muslim can visit. The other one is the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. The design for the Tinmal Mosque was inspired by the Great Mosque of Taza. This mosque was also built by Abd al-Mu'min, another important Almohad leader. In turn, the famous Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech was designed using the Tinmal Mosque as a model.
On September 8, 2023, a strong earthquake caused damage to the mosque. Its beautiful domes and elegant arches crumbled. Before the earthquake, a team of archaeologists, historians, and engineers had almost finished restoring the mosque. They had been working for many months to fix and preserve this important historical building.
World Heritage Status
The Tinmel mosque is recognized as a very important cultural site. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on July 1, 1995. This means it is being considered to become a full World Heritage Site, which would protect it even more.
