Academy Hall is a very old building in Rocky Hill, Connecticut. It is located at 785 Old Main Street. This building was constructed in 1803. It is a great example of a style called Federal style.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Today, Academy Hall is home to the Academy Hall Museum. This museum is run by the Rocky Hill Historical Society.
The Story of Academy Hall
Academy Hall stands in the middle of Rocky Hill. It is on the west side of Old Main Street. You can find it between the town office building and the Rocky Hill Congregational Church.
What Does It Look Like?
Academy Hall is a brick building with two and a half stories. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides. The building is wide, with eight sections across the front. It has two main entrances on the long front side.
The windows and doors on the first floor have special flat stone tops. The windows on the second floor are placed close to the roof. The bricks are laid in a pattern called Flemish bond. There is also a small brick ledge between the first and second floors. The inside of the building has changed a lot over the years.
From School to Museum
Abraham Jaggars built Academy Hall in 1803. It is one of the few very old school buildings left in Connecticut. It is also special because its outside look has not changed much.
The building was used as a school for a very long time. It was a school from when it was built until 1941. At first, it was a private school. After a fire in 1839, it became a public school.
The public school used the first floor until 1916. The upstairs part was used as a community center. After a new school was built in 1941, Academy Hall housed town offices. It also hosted a local group called the American Legion.
By 1963, the building was in poor condition. The Rocky Hill Historical Society took over the building. They worked hard to fix it up. The society's museum opened its doors in 1965.
