Exploring Academy Hill's History

Stroudsburg is the oldest town in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. It became an official "borough" (a type of town) in 1815. Later, in 1836, when Monroe County was formed, Stroudsburg became the main town, or "county seat."

Architectural Styles You Can See

The Academy Hill Historic District is home to many historic houses. Most of these homes were built between the mid-1800s and the early 1900s. They show off different popular building styles from that time.

Some of the cool styles you might see include:

  • Colonial Revival: This style brings back the look of early American homes.
  • Bungalow / American Craftsman: These homes are usually smaller and cozy, with natural materials.
  • Queen Anne Style: These houses often have towers, turrets, and decorative details.

There are also unique styles like North Cat, Gavel End Bungalow, Northern Removed Colonial, and West Gate Bungalow. Eight of the buildings in the district are even older, built before 1858!

Why Academy Hill is a Historic Place

The National Register of Historic Places is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. When a place is added to this list, it means it's recognized for its historical or architectural value.

How the District Got Listed

In November 1988, a person named Janet W. Foster helped prepare the paperwork. She worked to get the Academy Hill Historic District added to the National Register. Her hard work paid off, and the district was officially added later that same year.
