Acalayong is a small town in Equatorial Guinea. It is located in the Litoral province, right across the Muni Estuary. This town is about 117 kilometers (73 miles) from the city of Bata. Acalayong is the southernmost town in Equatorial Guinea.

Acalayong: A Border Town

Acalayong is an important border crossing point. It is one of two places where people can cross into Gabon. Travelers from Bata and other cities in Equatorial Guinea, especially those from the Littoral province, often sail from Acalayong to Cocobeach in Gabon.

Because it is mainly a border town, Acalayong does not get many tourists. Most visitors are people traveling between the two countries.

Getting Around Acalayong

The most common way to cross the estuary from Acalayong is by pirogue. These are traditional dugout canoes. Some pirogues even have outboard motors to make the journey faster.

Traveling to Acalayong from cities like Bata or Mbini can be challenging. The road from Bata is about an eight-hour journey. It is often in poor condition. The dense jungle grows very close to the road, making it feel like it's being swallowed up.

During the heavy rainy season, the journey can be especially long and tricky. It is usually best to travel in a 4x4 vehicle. Smaller cars might struggle on these roads.
