A Brief History of Achí
The story of Achí began with an older town called Ojolargo.
The Founding of Ojolargo
Ojolargo was founded on September 24, 1770. It was located about 6 kilometers from where Achí is today. By 1779, Ojolargo had 471 people living there.
Moving to a New Home
In 1814, a serious illness, a cholera epidemic, spread through Ojolargo. Many people got sick, and the residents started to leave. They moved to a new place where they found many trees with a tropical fruit called Achí. This new place was named after the fruit.
In 1815, the mayor of Majagual, Estanislao Huertas Lorenzana, officially ordered everyone from Ojolargo to move to the new Achí village. By 1817, the new town was fully formed. It became part of the Canton of Majagual.
Challenges and Growth
Achí faced a big challenge on March 6, 1869, when an earthquake destroyed the village. However, the people rebuilt it.
In 1934, Achí became its own separate municipality, no longer part of Majagual. Its first mayor was Pedro Barragén Constantino. Later, two other towns, Montecristo, Bolívar and San Jacinto del Cauca, became separate municipalities from Achí in 1994 and 1997.
