Achille Leone Occhetto (born March 3, 1936) is an Italian politician. He was the last leader of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) from 1988 to 1991. Later, he became the first leader of the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS). This new party was a socialist group that followed the PCI.

Achille Occhetto's Early Life and Career

Achille Occhetto was born in Turin, Italy. He started his political journey early. From 1963 to 1966, he led the Italian Communist Youth Federation. He had been a member of this group since 1953.

Fighting the Mafia in Sicily

After his time with the youth group, Occhetto became a regional leader for the PCI in Sicily. While there, he was known for his strong efforts against the mafia. He worked hard to fight against organized crime in the region.

Leading the Communist Party

In 1986, Occhetto became a national coordinator for the PCI. He then became its main leader in 1988, taking over from Alessandro Natta. During his time as leader, big changes happened in the world. The Berlin Wall fell, and the Soviet Union broke apart.

Occhetto understood that the time of Communist states was ending. He convinced the PCI to change completely. The party decided to become a new, democratic socialist party called the PDS. This big change is known in Italy as the Svolta della Bolognina. It means "the turning point of Bolognina."

The Bolognina Turning Point

Occhetto announced that the PCI would change its name, its symbol, and its goals. About 70% of the party members agreed with this change. This happened at a big meeting on February 8, 1991. This event marked a new direction for the party.

Later Political Life

In 1994, Occhetto led a group called the Alliance of Progressives. They ran against Silvio Berlusconi in the 1994 Italian general election. Occhetto's group lost the election. Because of this, he stepped down as the party leader.

He returned to politics later. In 2004, he was elected to the European Parliament. He joined forces with Antonio Di Pietro, who fought against corruption. Occhetto later resigned from this role. He returned to the European Parliament in 2006. He sat as an independent member. In 2009, he joined a new left-wing party called Left Ecology Freedom. Achille Occhetto is an atheist.

Achille Occhetto's Family Life

Achille Occhetto has been married several times. He was married to Elisa Kadigia Bove, who was an activist and actress. They had two sons together, Malcolm and Massimiliano. Both of their sons were born in Sicily. He was also married to Aureliana Alberici, who was also a member of his political party.
