Achille Leone Occhetto (born March 3, 1936) is an important Italian political figure. He was the last leader of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) from 1988 to 1991. After that, he became the first leader of the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS). This new party was a socialist group that took the place of the PCI.
Early Life and Political Career
Achille Occhetto was born in Turin, Italy. When he was young, he joined the Italian Communist Youth Federation in 1953. He later became its secretary from 1963 to 1966. After this, he worked as the regional secretary for the PCI in Sicily. There, he was known for fighting against organized crime, like the mafia.
In 1986, Occhetto became a national coordinator for the PCI. Two years later, in 1988, he became the party's main secretary. This was a very important time in history. The Berlin Wall fell, and the Soviet Union broke apart. These events showed that the idea of a "Communist state" was ending.
Occhetto understood this change. He convinced the PCI to change its name, logo, and goals. The party decided to become a new, democratic socialist party called the PDS. This big change in Italian politics was called the Svolta della Bolognina. About 70% of the party members agreed to this change in 1991.
In 1994, Occhetto led a group of parties called the Alliance of Progressives. They ran against Silvio Berlusconi in the general election. Occhetto's group lost the election. Because of this, he stepped down as the party secretary.
He later returned to politics. In 2004, he was elected to the European Parliament. He joined forces with Antonio Di Pietro, who fought against corruption. Occhetto then resigned and was replaced by another politician. He returned to the European Parliament in 2006. He sat as an independent member of the Party of European Socialists group. In 2009, he joined a new left-wing party called Left Ecology Freedom. Achille Occhetto is an atheist.
Personal Life
Achille Occhetto was married to Elisa Kadigia Bove, who was an activist and actress. They had two sons, Malcolm and Massimiliano. Later, he married Aureliana Alberici, who was also a member of his political party.
