The Achilles tang (scientific name: Acanthurus achilles) is a beautiful tropical fish that lives in the Pacific Ocean. It's also known as the Achilles surgeonfish.

About the Achilles Tang

Achilles tangs are medium-sized fish. They can grow up to about 25 centimeters (10 inches) long. These fish are mostly black. They have bright orange and white lines on their fins and tail. As they get older, a special orange teardrop shape appears near their tail. This shape ends in a very sharp spine, which is why they are called "surgeonfish." It's like a tiny, sharp tool!

What Do Achilles Tangs Eat?

Achilles tangs are plant-eaters, also known as herbivores. Their main food is algae that grows on the ocean floor. If they live in an aquarium, they can also eat frozen foods like brine shrimp. It's important for them to eat lots of plants. This helps them stay healthy and happy.

Where Do Achilles Tangs Live?

You can find Achilles tangs in many coral reefs across the Pacific Ocean. They live near islands like Hawaii and Pitcairn. Sometimes, they are also seen in the Mariana Islands. You might even find them in some reefs off the coasts of southern Mexico and Guatemala.
