Achnopogon is a small group of flowering plants. These plants belong to the large plant family called Asteraceae, which is also known as the daisy or sunflower family. Scientists first officially described Achnopogon as its own genus in 1957.
This entire group of plants is endemic to Venezuela. This means that Achnopogon plants grow naturally only in Venezuela and nowhere else in the world.

What is Achnopogon?
Achnopogon is a genus, which is a way scientists group similar living things together. Think of it like a family name for plants. All the plants in the Achnopogon genus share many common features. They are flowering plants, meaning they produce flowers as part of their life cycle.
The Daisy Family (Asteraceae)
The Achnopogon genus is part of the Asteraceae family. This is one of the biggest families of flowering plants on Earth. It includes many well-known plants like daisies, sunflowers, dandelions, and asters. Plants in this family often have flower heads that look like a single flower, but are actually made up of many tiny flowers packed closely together.
Where Achnopogon Plants Live
All known species of Achnopogon are found only in Venezuela, a country in South America. They are especially found in the State of Bolívar, which is in the southeastern part of Venezuela. This makes them unique to that region.
Known Species
Currently, there are two recognized species within the Achnopogon genus:
- Achnopogon steyermarkii Aristeg.
- Achnopogon virgatus Maguire, Steyerm. & Wurdack
