Achor is a small, quiet place in Ohio, United States. It's not a city or a town with its own government, but rather an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that are part of a larger township. Achor is located in Columbiana County, just a few miles south of Negley. It's also very close to the state border with Pennsylvania. A long time ago, Achor was an important settlement in the eastern part of the county. Today, very few people live there, and it's almost like a ghost town – a place that was once busy but is now mostly empty.

A Look Back at Achor's History

How Achor Got Its Name

Achor was first planned out around the year 1806. Back then, it was known by a longer name: "The Valley of Achor." When a place is "plat"ted, it means its streets and lots are officially mapped out. Over the years, people used different names for it, like Achorston, Achortown, Anchorstown, and even Middleton.

Mail Service in Achor

A post office was opened in Achor in 1816. This was an important service for the community, allowing people to send and receive mail. The post office stayed open for many years, but it eventually closed down in 1901.

A Community Changes Over Time

Achor was once a busy and important place in its area. However, over time, fewer people lived there, and many buildings were no longer used. In 2020, the Valley of Achor Baptist Church, which was the only original building left from the community's early days, unfortunately burned down. This event marked another change for the historic area.
