Acinos is a group of ten different types of plants. These plants are found naturally in southern Europe and western Asia. Some Acinos plants live for only one year (they are called annuals). Others live for many years (they are called perennials) and stay green all year round (they are evergreen plants).

They are small, woody plants that grow in clumps or spread out. They usually reach about 10 to 45 centimeters tall. Their name, Acinos, comes from an old Greek word for a small, sweet-smelling plant. In the middle of summer, these plants grow upright stems with unique, two-lipped, tube-shaped flowers.

All About Acinos Plants

Acinos belongs to a larger group of plants called a genus. Think of a genus like a family name for plants that share many features. There are ten known types, or species, within the Acinos genus. These plants are part of the Lamiaceae family, which is also known as the mint family. Many plants in this family have square stems and fragrant leaves.

Where Acinos Plants Grow

These plants are native to areas around the Mediterranean Sea. This includes southern Europe and parts of western Asia. They are used to growing in sunny, often rocky, places. Their ability to be annual, perennial, or evergreen helps them survive in different conditions.

What Acinos Plants Look Like

Acinos plants are usually quite small. They can grow in a bushy shape or spread along the ground. Their size, from 10 to 45 centimeters, makes them good for rock gardens or natural landscapes. The flowers are a special feature. They have two "lips" and are shaped like a tube. These flowers grow on tall, straight stems that appear in the middle of summer.

Species of Acinos

Here are some of the known species within the Acinos genus:

  • Acinos alpinus
  • Acinos arvensis
  • Acinos corsicus
  • Acinos rotundifolius
  • Acinos suaveolens
