Acmar is a small place in St. Clair County, Alabama. It used to be its own community, but now it's part of the city of Moody. It's located in the U.S. state of Alabama.

Acmar's Story: A Look Back

Acmar has an interesting history, mostly connected to mining. A man named Henry F. DeBardeleben started the Alabama Fuel & Iron Company (AFICO). He opened two coal mines in Acmar.

Coal Mining Days

These mines were very important for the area. Trains from the Central of Georgia Railway helped move the coal. Coal production was at its highest around 1926. The mines were a big part of life in Acmar for many years.

However, in 1935, there was a conflict during a workers' strike. This event caused problems for the mines. Eventually, the mines in Acmar closed down in 1951.

How Acmar Got Its Name

The name Acmar is a mix of two other places where AFICO also had mines: Acton and Margaret. It's like combining parts of their names to make a new one!

A post office was opened in Acmar in 1911. It helped people send and receive mail for many years. The post office stayed open until 1987.

A Part of Moody Now

After the mines closed, Acmar slowly changed. It later became part of the nearby city of Moody. This means Acmar is now a neighborhood within Moody.

Nature Around Acmar

Did you know that a famous river starts near Acmar? The Cahaba River begins its journey close to this area. It's one of Alabama's most beautiful and important rivers.
