The Acme Farm Supply Building is a special old building in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, USA. It is listed on a special list of important places. This building started as a grocery store. Since 2014, it has been a popular restaurant and a place where people can enjoy live music.

Where is the Acme Building?

The Acme Farm Supply Building is in Downtown Nashville. You can find it right on the corner of First Avenue and Broadway. It is also very close to the Cumberland River.

A Look at the Building's History

The Acme Farm Supply Building was built a long time ago, in 1890. A builder named J.R. Whitemore created this three-story building.

Early Businesses in the Building

When it first opened in 1890, two brothers, Frederic and William Cummins, rented the building. They opened their grocery store there. Over the years, many different businesses used the building. Some of them were:

  • Southern Soda Works
  • Continental Baking Powder Co.
  • Ford Flour Co.
  • D. Byrd and Co.

In 1913, a company called Bearden Buggy Co. moved in. They sold buggies, which were like old-fashioned carriages. To help move the buggies, a wooden elevator was added inside the building. After that, other companies like Sherman Transfer Co. and Chadwell Transfer and Storage Co. also used the space.

The Acme Farm Supply Store Era

In 1943, the building became home to Acme Feed and Hatchery. Later, in 1965, it was known as Acme Farm Supply. This store sold many things farmers needed, like "straw, feed, wire, and tools."

Currey L. Turner, a businessman from Nashville, owned the farm supply store. He even had a pet calf named Beautena! This calf sometimes appeared in commercials for the Grand Ole Opry, a famous country music show. In 1980, Currey's son, Lester Turner Sr., bought the building. The farm supply store closed in September 1999. Even though the store closed, the Turner family still owns the building today. It was empty for a while, from 2000 until 2013.

Becoming a Restaurant and Music Spot

In 2013, a group of businesspeople decided to give the building a new life. Tom Morales, who owns a company that provides food for movie sets, was part of this group. The famous country music singer Alan Jackson also joined them. They rented the building from the Turner family. Their plan was to turn it into a restaurant, a bar, and a place for live music.

The new place was named Acme Feed & Seed. It opened its doors in 2014 and quickly became a popular spot in Nashville.

Why is This Building Important?

The Acme Farm Supply Building is important because of its long history. It has been officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1998. This means it's recognized as a special place that should be protected. A history professor named D. Loren McWatters from Middle Tennessee State University helped research the building's past to get it on this important list.
