About the San Diego Bird's-Foot Trefoil

Where Does This Plant Live?

This special plant grows in the coastal mountains of California and a part of Mexico called Baja California. It likes to live in different kinds of places, like scrublands (areas with small bushes) and canyons.

What Does It Look Like?

The San Diego bird's-foot trefoil is an annual herb. This means it grows from a seed, flowers, produces seeds, and then dies all within one year. It can grow either spread out along the ground or stand upright. Its stems are lined with small leaves. Each leaf is made up of several oval-shaped leaflets, and each leaflet is about one centimeter long.

Flowers and Fruit

The plant produces small bunches of flowers. These flowers are usually red and yellow. Each flower is quite tiny, only a few millimeters long. They grow inside a tube-shaped part called a calyx, which is made of leaf-like parts called sepals.

After the flowers bloom, the plant produces fruit. The fruit is a narrow, bent legume pod. It can be up to 1.5 centimeters long. At the very tip of the pod, there is a hooked beak shape.
