Exploring Actaeon Sound and Nearby Places

Actaeon Sound is surrounded by interesting geographical features. These include peninsulas, lagoons, and islands.

Bond Peninsula and Lagoon

On the south side of Actaeon Sound, you will find the Bond Peninsula. This peninsula is partly formed by a smaller body of water called Bond Lagoon. Both of these places were likely named in 1865. They are connected to other names related to the British Royal Navy.

Actress Passage and Charlotte Point

Actress Passage is a waterway that connects Actaeon Sound to Drury Inlet. On its southeast side is Charlotte Point. This point also appeared on maps around 1865. Many places in this region were first mapped at that time.

Dove Island: A Special Place

Dove Island is located right in the middle of the opening of Actaeon Sound. It sits on the Drury Inlet side. This island is very important. It is known as Dove Island Indian Reserve No. 12. This reserve covers about 8.1 hectares (about 20 acres). It is managed by the Gwawaenuk Tribe. They are part of the Kwakwaka'wakw group of Indigenous peoples.

Mount Bullock

Across from Bond Peninsula, on the north side of Actaeon Sound, is Mount Bullock. This mountain is named after Lieut. Cdr James Bullock. He was a Royal Navy officer.

How These Places Got Their Names

Many places in this area were named after ships or people from the British Royal Navy. This happened during the time when these coasts were being explored and mapped.

Naming Actaeon Sound

The name Actaeon Sound was chosen in 1865 by Captain Pender. The idea came from W. Blakeney, who was a paymaster on the ship Beaver. Blakeney suggested the name after his old ship, HMS Actaeon. He had served on this 26-gun frigate in China.

Naming Dove Island

It is believed that Dove Island was named after the gunboat HMS Dove. This ship was commanded by Lieut. Cdr James Bullock. The Dove worked with HMS Actaeon in places like the East Indies and China.
