Acun Ilıcalı was born in Edirne, Turkey, on May 29, 1969. His family originally came from Erzurum Province in Turkey.
Media Career
Starting in Television
Ilıcalı began his career in television when he was 22 years old. He started as a sports reporter for the Turkish TV channel Show TV. By 2002, he was creating many popular shows for different channels in Turkey.
Acun Firarda and ACUNMEDYA
One of his most successful shows was Acun Firarda. In this travel and entertainment program, he visited over 100 countries. He became very well-known in Turkey because his shows were so popular.
In 2004, Ilıcalı started his own company, ACUNMEDYA. This company bought the rights to famous TV shows from other countries. Then, they made Turkish versions of these shows. Some of these popular shows included Deal or No Deal?, Fear Factor, Survivor, MasterChef, Got Talent, and The Voice. All these shows were broadcast during prime time and were very successful.
International Success
In 2016, ACUNMEDYA started producing shows in Greece. They made Greek versions of shows like The Voice and Survivor. These shows were incredibly popular in Greece, with very high ratings.
After their success, ACUNMEDYA created a new sports reality show called Exatlon. This show started in 2017 and was broadcast in many countries. These included the USA, Mexico, Romania, and Brazil. Exatlon is still one of the most-watched shows in the countries where it airs.
Today, ACUNMEDYA produces TV content on four continents. They work in more than 10 countries around the world.
Exxen Digital Platform
ACUNMEDYA also launched Exxen, a digital streaming platform. Exxen focuses on family-friendly content. It has over 1 million subscribers. Exxen has also bought the rights to broadcast major football tournaments. These include the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Europa Conference League in Turkey.
Sports Teams
Acun Ilıcalı has also invested in football teams. In 2020, he bought a share in the Dutch football team Fortuna Sittard. He ended his partnership with them in 2021.
In 2022, his company ACUNMEDYA bought the English football team Hull City A.F.C..
In June 2023, it was announced that Ilıcalı had bought a share in Shelbourne F.C., an Irish football club. He became a majority shareholder but later gave up control in November 2023.
