Adán Cárdenas del Castillo (born June 7, 1836 – died January 1, 1916) was an important person from Nicaragua. He was a doctor and a politician. He also served as the President of Nicaragua for four years, from March 1, 1883, to March 1, 1887. He was a member of the Conservative Party.

Early Life and Education

Adán Cárdenas was born in the old city of Granada. This city is located right by Lake Cocibolca in Nicaragua.

When he was about 16 years old, in 1852, Adán and his parents moved to Europe. While living there, he went to the National School of Genoa. He later studied medicine at the University of Pisa in Tuscany, Italy. He earned his degree as a doctor there.

After finishing his studies, Adán Cárdenas returned to Nicaragua in 1862.

Family Life

Adán Cárdenas married Gertrudis Martínez Solórzano. Her father was Tomás Martínez Guerrero, who was also a President of Nicaragua before Adán. Gertrudis's mother was named Gertrudis Solórzano Zavala.

Adán Cárdenas had a grandson named René Cárdenas. René became famous for being the first Spanish-language announcer to cover Major League Baseball games.
