Adán Chávez Frías, born on April 11, 1953, is a Venezuelan politician. He served as the Governor of Barinas state from 2008 to 2016. Before becoming governor, he was Venezuela's Ambassador to Cuba. He also held the position of Minister of Education from 2007 to 2008. Adán Chávez is the older brother of Hugo Chávez, who was the President of Venezuela.

Early Life and Education
Adán Chávez was born in Sabaneta, Barinas, Venezuela. He is the eldest of seven brothers. When he was young, his parents entrusted his upbringing to his paternal grandmother, Rosa Inés Chávez. He studied at the University of the Andes in Mérida. During his time at the university, he became involved with different political groups.
Political Career
Adán Chávez has had a long career in Venezuelan politics. In 2008, he was elected as the Governor of Barinas state. He represented the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). He took over this role from his father, Hugo de los Reyes Chávez.
After serving as governor, Adán Chávez continued his work in public service. On March 7, 2019, he was appointed as Venezuela's ambassador to Cuba. Since February 14, 2023, he has been the Rector (leader) of the Universidad Nacional Experimental de los Llanos Ezequiel Zamora. This university is located in the plains region of Venezuela.
Adán Chávez has often spoken about his views on international relations. In 2018, he told members of his political party that he sees the "American empire" as a main challenge.
International Sanctions
Some countries have placed sanctions on Adán Chávez. Sanctions are actions taken by one country to punish another country or specific individuals. They are often used to encourage changes in policies or behavior.
United States Sanctions
On August 9, 2017, the United States Department of the Treasury placed sanctions on Adán Chávez. This was because of his role in the Presidential Commission for the 2017 Constituent Assembly of Venezuela.
Canadian Sanctions
On November 3, 2017, the Government of Canada also placed sanctions on Adán Chávez. Canada stated that he was involved in "significant acts of corruption or serious violations of human rights."
Panamanian Sanctions
On March 29, 2018, the government of Panama sanctioned Adán Chávez. Panama stated that he was allegedly involved in "money laundering, financing of terrorism and financing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction."
Family Life
Adán Chávez is the eldest brother of Hugo Chávez (1954–2013), who served as President of Venezuela. His other brothers include Anibal José Chávez Frías (1956–2016), who was the mayor of Sabaneta, Barinas, and Argenis Chávez (born 1958), who also served as Governor of Barinas. He has three other brothers named Narciso, Enzo, and Adelis.
Adán Chávez is married to Carmen Herenia Hernández Puente. They were married in 1974. Together, they have four children: Enzo (born 1975), Elena (born 1977), Ernesto (born 1982), and Elyana (born 1985). He also has nine grandchildren. Adán Chávez is the great-grandson of a Venezuelan leader named Pedro Pérez Delgado, who was known as Maisanta.
