Adaloald (born 602, died 628) was a Lombard king who ruled Italy from 616 to 626. He became king when he was still a teenager.
Adaloald was the son of King Agilulf and Queen Theodelinda. He was baptized as a baby in 602, with a historian named Secundus of Non as his godfather. When he was very young, his father asked the warriors to name Adaloald as a future king, a tradition called "raising on the shield." This meant he was an "associate king" alongside his father.
Becoming King
When Adaloald became the main king as a teenager, his mother, Queen Theodelinda, helped him rule. She was his regent, meaning she managed the kingdom until he was old enough to do it fully on his own. During their time ruling together, many churches were repaired, and gifts were given to important religious places. This was written about by a historian named Paul the Deacon in his book, History of the Lombards.
End of His Reign
As Adaloald grew older, he faced some health challenges and began to lose the support of the important nobles in his kingdom. In 626, the nobles decided to remove him from power. They chose Arioald to be the new king instead. Arioald was a Lombard noble from Turin and was married to Adaloald's sister, Gundeberga. Adaloald died in Ravenna in 628, not long after he was removed from the throne.
