The Adam & Eve was once a popular place in Birmingham, England. It was a type of building called a public house. This building stood on the corner of Bradford Street and Warner Street in Deritend. People had gathered at a pub with this name for over 200 years!
What's in a Name?
The name Adam & Eve is a bit unusual for a pub. But it has a cool connection! It's linked to a group called the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers. This group, which deals with fruits, used Adam and Eve in their official symbol or crest.
The Original Building
The spot where the Adam & Eve stood was first shown on a map in 1748. The first person officially known to run the pub was John Robinson in 1801. He might have been the landlord even earlier, from 1787.
Old records from 1837 describe the original building. It had different parts, like a back area, a washhouse, and a stable. There was also a house facing Warner Street.
Changes Over Time
In 1889, a company called Brewers Investment Corporation Ltd took over the Adam & Eve. They decided to give it a big makeover. They added large windows and new signs. This made it look more like other pubs of that time.
The inside was also changed. They created a special area for people to buy drinks to take home. Toilets were also built in the back yard. More updates happened in 1921 and 1928. A smoke room and a kitchen were added. They also opened an assembly room and a dining room upstairs. The pub even got indoor toilets, which was quite fancy back then!
Sadly, the Adam & Eve was badly damaged during the Birmingham Blitz. This was when bombs fell on Birmingham during World War II. Many buildings nearby were completely destroyed. The pub was never fully fixed after this damage.
Why Did It Close?
The Adam & Eve stopped being a pub in 2015. This happened after a serious event in October of the year before. The building was then sold at an auction. A group that helps people find homes bought it. They changed the building into places for people to live.
In 2018, a coffee shop opened on the ground floor. This coffee shop is a not-for-profit business. This means it uses its money to help others, not just to make a profit.
