Adam Frederick Cullen (born 9 October 1965 – died 28 July 2012) was a famous Australian artist. He was best known for winning the Archibald Prize in 2000. This prestigious award was for his painting of actor David Wenham. Adam Cullen had a very unique art style. Some people called it "grunge" art. His art often showed unusual or surprising topics. Adam Cullen was born in Sydney, Australia, on 9 October 1965. He studied art at the City Art Institute. He earned a diploma in professional art in 1987. Later, he received a Master of Fine Arts degree. This was from the University of New South Wales in 1999. Adam Cullen was also a cousin of the actor and artist Max Cullen.
Art Career
Adam Cullen lived and worked in Wentworth Falls, New South Wales. This town is located in the beautiful Blue Mountains of New South Wales. His artworks were shown in many exhibitions. These shows took place in Australia and other countries.
Cullen was already a well-known "grunge" painter in Sydney. Then, he won the famous Archibald Prize in 2000. This prize was for his portrait of actor David Wenham. In 2002, he represented Australia. This was at the 25th São Paulo Art Biennial, a big international art event.

Adam Cullen's art was very distinctive. He said he often painted while listening to punk bands. These included groups like the Meat Puppets and Black Flag. This book was written by Erik Jensen in 2015. It won the 2015 Nib Literary Award. It was also considered for other major awards.
A movie based on Jensen's book was released in 2018. It was called Acute Misfortune. Thomas M. Wright directed it. The movie focused on Adam Cullen's difficult relationship with his biographer.
