The Meat Puppets are an alternative rock and punk rock band from Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. They started in 1980. The band was formed by brothers Curt Kirkwood (who sings and plays guitar) and Cris Kirkwood (who plays bass), along with Derrick Bostrom (who plays drums). Many people know the band best for their song "Backwater," which was a hit on the radio in 1994.

Band History and Music
The Meat Puppets are known for their unique sound. It mixes different styles of music. They started with a hardcore punk sound. Later, they added elements of alternative rock and cowpunk. This blend made their music stand out.
Early Years and Albums
After forming in 1980, the band quickly gained attention. They released several albums on SST Records. These early albums helped them build a strong fan base. They were known for their energetic live shows.
Taking a Break and New Projects
The band took a break in 2001. During this time, Curt Kirkwood worked on other music projects. He formed a band called Eyes Adrift with Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic. He also started another band named Volcano. Curt also released his own solo music.
Reforming the Band
In 2006, the Meat Puppets got back together. They released a new album called Rise to Your Knees in 2007. This showed that the band was ready to make music again.
Current Members and Performances
As of November 2009, Shandon Sahm rejoined the band as the drummer. He had played with them before. The band continues to perform and create music. In May 2011, the band Animal Collective chose the Meat Puppets to play their album Up on the Sun live. This happened at the All Tomorrow's Parties music festival.
