Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Adam de Tyninghame was an important church leader in the 1300s. He probably came from a place called Tyninghame in East Lothian, Scotland. The 1300s are also known as the 14th century.

Adam's Life and Work

Adam de Tyninghame first appears in old records around 1344. At that time, he was a church leader, or rector, in Falkirk. This church was connected to Holyrood Abbey.

Working for Important People

By 1360, Adam became the secretary for William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas. A secretary back then was a very important assistant to a powerful noble. This shows Adam was trusted and skilled.

In 1378, the Scottish king chose Adam to be an ambassador to France. An ambassador is someone sent to represent their country in another land. Adam was one of four people sent on this important mission.

Becoming a Bishop

Adam held several important church positions. He was a Dean in the church, which is a senior leader, for the diocese of Aberdeen from 1362. A diocese is a church area looked after by a bishop. He was briefly Dean of Dunblane in 1361.

In 1380, Adam was chosen to be the Bishop of Aberdeen. A bishop is a high-ranking church leader who oversees many churches and priests in a large area.

Challenges as Bishop

As Bishop, Adam faced some challenges. In 1382, he had a disagreement with farmers from a place called "Fermartyne" (Formartine). They had not paid their tithes, which were payments made to the church, like a tax. Bishop Adam had to get an order from John, the Earl of Carrick, who was the Lieutenant of Scotland, to make them pay.

Adam didn't get along well with Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan. This Earl was a very powerful leader in the north of Scotland and was the brother of the Earl of Carrick.

Adam kept his strong connections with the Douglas family, who had supported him early in his career. In the 1380s, he was often seen signing important papers for Margaret, Countess of Mar. She was the wife of the first Earl of Douglas and mother to the second.

Adam de Tyninghame passed away on September 18, 1389.
