History of Adams

The first people to settle in Adams were Cornish miners. They came to find lead, a type of metal. After them, settlers arrived from New England, Ireland, Switzerland, and Norway.

Early Churches in Adams

The town has been home to both Lutheran and Catholic churches.

Saint Francis Catholic Church

Irish Catholic immigrants built Saint Francis Catholic Church. Over time, this church joined with Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Argyle, Wisconsin. Eventually, the Saint Francis church building was taken down. Today, only its cemetery remains.

Adams Lutheran Church

Norwegian immigrants started Adams Lutheran Church. They came from areas in Norway called Valdres and Hadeland. At first, priests from the Church of Norway served this church.

Later, the church became part of different Lutheran groups. It joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) when its earlier group merged with others.

Building the Church

The first church building was made during the American Civil War. The people who built it used limestone from a nearby quarry. A quarry is a place where stone is dug out of the ground.

Inside, the walls of the church were covered with dark wood panels. These panels had a special herringbone pattern, which looks like rows of V-shapes. This church served the community for almost 150 years. Sadly, it burned down. But a new church was built very quickly, right next to where the old one stood.
