Adaton is a small, quiet community in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, in the United States. It's not a big city, but a place where people live without a formal town government. It was once known by different names, like Steele's Mill and Aderton. You can find Adaton about four miles west of Starkville. It's near Mississippi Highway 182 and Self Creek Road, just south of Oktibbeha County Lake.

History of Adaton

Adaton started as a busy place thanks to James Robert Steele. Around 1852, he built a lumber mill and a cotton gin here. A cotton gin is a machine that quickly separates cotton fibers from their seeds. This was very important for farmers.

Early Businesses and Growth

Later, in 1893, another person named John Easterwood built a new cotton gin. It was located near Christopher's Store, which was a local shop that served the community for many years. In 1870, Adaton got its very first post office. This helped people send and receive mail, connecting them to other places.

Churches and Community Life

Adaton became known for its many churches, and some of them are still active today.

  • The Adaton United Methodist Church started in 1878. It was first organized even earlier, in 1856, as Steele's Chapel.
  • Josey Creek Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1886. It began in a simple "brush arbor," which is a shelter made from branches and leaves.
  • Adaton Baptist Church was founded in 1923.

These churches were important gathering places for the community.

Changes in the Economy

Over the years, the way people made a living in Adaton changed.

  • At first, it was mostly about cotton farming.
  • Then, people started focusing on dairy farming, which means raising cows for milk.
  • Later, lumber became important, using wood from trees.

Today, Adaton is mostly a "bedroom community." This means many people who live there travel to work in nearby Starkville or attend Mississippi State University.
