Early Life and Music
Adele Anthony was born in Singapore. Her father, Alphonse Jivaras Anthony, was the first concertmaster of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. A concertmaster is the lead violinist in an orchestra.
When Adele was two and a half years old, her family moved to Tasmania, Australia. That's when she started playing the violin! Later, her family settled in South Australia. She went to Dernancourt Primary School and studied violin in Adelaide with teachers Lyndall Hendrickson and Beryl Kimber. During her high school years, she attended Pembroke School and Saint Ignatius' College.
Becoming a Young Star
In 1984, when Adele was 13, she won the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition. This competition is now called the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards. She played the Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Winning this award at such a young age showed her amazing talent.
After her big win, Adele went to the Juilliard School in New York. She studied there for eight years with a famous violin teacher named Dorothy DeLay. In 1996, she won another important award, the Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition.
