Adelhida Talbot (born Paleotti; 24 July 1660 – 29 June 1726) was an important person in the British royal court and a noblewoman. She was the wife of Charles Talbot, 1st Duke of Shrewsbury. Adelhida was the daughter of Marchese Andrea Paleotti and Christina (née Dudley). Her mother's family had a connection to Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester.

Early Life and First Marriage

Adelhida's first marriage was to a Count Roffeni. He was said to have worked for Queen Christina of Sweden. Adelhida became a widow before she met the Duke of Shrewsbury in Italy. The Duke later said that he helped her become a Protestant by lending her a Bible to read.

Marriage to the Duke of Shrewsbury

Adelhida married the Duke of Shrewsbury in Augsburg, Bavaria, on 20 August or September 1705. The Duke kept their marriage quiet at first, telling only his closest friends. He knew some people might not approve because she was from another country and did not have a large fortune. Soon after their marriage, on 23 January 1706, a special law was passed in Parliament. This law allowed her to become a British citizen.

Life at the Royal Court

After returning to Britain, Adelhida became well-known in London society. She was a favorite of Queen Anne. When Queen Anne's husband, Prince George of Denmark, passed away, Adelhida showed her sympathy. She reportedly said, "Oh, my poor Queen, I see how much you do miss your dear husband."

Adelhida was also very popular with King George I. He arranged for her to become a Lady of the Bedchamber to Caroline of Ansbach, who was the Princess of Wales. This important role made some other ladies at court feel jealous. One of them, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, even wrote a satirical poem about Adelhida.

Visit to France

In 1713, Adelhida visited Paris with her husband on an official trip. She charmed the French people she met. A French writer, Louis de Rouvroy, Duc de Saint-Simon, thought she had a very unique personality. However, he agreed with her opinions about the very fancy French ladies' fashions. He praised the simple and practical hairstyle that Adelhida made popular.

Later Years and Legacy

Adelhida and the Duke of Shrewsbury did not have any children. When the Duke passed away, his title of Duke ended. The title of Earl went to a cousin, Gilbert Talbot. Adelhida died in Shropshire when she was 65 years old. This was eight years after her husband's death.
