Adeola Deborah Olubamiji is a Canadian expert in 3D printing. She works with both metal and plastic to create new things. In 2017, she made history. She became the first Black person to earn a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. She even gave a TEDx Talk. In her talk, she explained how she used 3D printing to help fix damaged body parts like cartilage.

Her Early Life and School

Adeola Olubamiji was born on April 3, 1985, in Nigeria. She grew up in a city called Ibadan. She went to local schools there, including Alafia Public Primary School.

She studied Physics at Olabisi Olubamiji University. Later, she earned her master's degree from Tampere University of Technology in Finland. She then moved to Canada for her PhD. She got her doctorate from the University of Saskatchewan. This made her the first Black person to get a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from that university.

What She Does

Adeola Olubamiji is a leader in 3D printing. She is currently a Director at Desktop Metal. There, she helps create solutions using advanced manufacturing.

Before this, she worked at Cummins Inc. in Indiana. She was an expert in additive manufacturing. She helped develop new 3D printing methods. She also improved how Cummins used laser printing for certain metals.

From 2016 to 2018, she worked at Burloak Technologies. She was the main expert for metals and materials. She also helped connect Burloak with the Multiscale Additive Manufacturing Lab at the University of Waterloo.

Adeola Olubamiji also started the STEMHub Foundation. This is a non-profit group in Canada. It helps teach students about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). She also serves on the board of Health Science & Innovation Inc. in Indianapolis. Plus, she runs D-Tech Centrix. This company helps people with their education and careers.

  • In 2017, she was named one of 150 Black women who are making Canada better. This was part of Canada's 150th birthday celebration.
  • In 2019, L'Oréal Paris named her one of their 10 Women of Worth Honorees in Canada.
  • Also in 2019, she was recognized as one of 27 Influential Women in Manufacturing in the USA.
  • In 2020, the Manufacturing Institute in the USA gave her the STEP Ahead Honoree award. This award celebrates female leaders in manufacturing.
  • She was also chosen as one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2020. This was in the Life Science and Technology group.
