Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Adina Izarra (born in 1959) is a talented Venezuelan musician, music educator (someone who teaches music), and composer (someone who writes music).

Biography

Adina Izarra was born in Caracas, Venezuela. She loved music from a young age and studied it with Alfredo del Mónaco in Caracas. Later, she earned her Ph.D. (a high-level university degree) in music composition from York University in England in 1988. Her teacher there was Vic Hoyland.

After finishing her studies in 1988, Izarra returned to Caracas. She became a professor of composition at Simón Bolívar University, teaching others how to create music. From 1999 to 2001, she was part of the main committee for the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), which is a group that supports new and modern music.

Today, Adina Izarra lives in Guayaquil, Ecuador. She teaches at the University of the Arts. She specializes in "live electronics," which means using electronic devices to create music during a performance. She also works with "audio-reactive visuals," where sounds create moving images.

She performs in a duet with Rubén Riera. He plays old and new string instruments, like the vihuela. Together, they create their own improvisations (music made up on the spot) and play their own songs. They also perform old music, but they change it using electronics to give it a new sound.

Adina recently earned another degree, a Master's in Digital Audiovisual Postproduction, from ESPOL in Guayaquil.
