Adityawarman was an important king who ruled the Malayapura kingdom in Sumatra. His full royal name was Maharajadiraja Srīmat Srī Udayādityawarma Pratāpaparākrama Rājendra Maulimāli Warmadewa. He took over from the Mauli dynasty in central Sumatra.

Adityawarman was related to powerful rulers. His cousin, Jayanegara, was the king of Majapahit from 1309 to 1328. His grandfather, Tribhuwanaraja, ruled the Melayu Kingdom. Adityawarman became a high-ranking minister in Majapahit. He used his power to help Majapahit expand its control, especially along the east coast of Sumatra.

Later, Adityawarman started a new royal family in Pagaruyung. This family is linked to the Minangkabau people of today. He controlled the important gold trade in central Sumatra from 1347 to 1375.

Early Life of Adityawarman

Adityawarman was born around 1294. He was born in Trowulan, East Java. This city was the capital of the powerful kingdom of Majapahit. Old writings like the Pararaton tell us about his birth.

According to an inscription found in Limo Kaum, West Sumatra, Adityawarman's father was a Majapahit nobleman named Adwayawarman. His mother was Dara Jingga, a princess from the Malay kingdom of Dharmasraya. Some historians think he might have visited China in 1325. This is because a Chinese record mentions an envoy named Sengk'ia-lie-yu-lan, which might have been Adityawarman.

Adityawarman's Rise to Power

Adityawarman's name appeared in Java as early as 1343. It was on a statue of Bodhisattva Manjusri. This statue was originally at Candi Jago, a special temple. King Kertanegara built this temple for his father.

In some old writings, Adityawarman called himself the Lord of the Golden Earth. This shows his power and wealth. An inscription from 1347 was found in Rambahan, West Sumatra. It was written by Adityawarman himself. This inscription celebrates his role as a protector. It also shows his power as an embodiment of the Amoghapasa statue.

King of Malayapura

At Malayapura, Adityawarman took on a long royal title. It was Udayadityavarman Pratapaparakrama Rājendra Maulimalivarmadewa. This title combined names from old kingdoms like Srivijaya and Malayu. His kingdom is believed to be the start of the Minangkabau society. The Minangkabau are known for their unique matrilineal system, where family lines are traced through mothers.

Adityawarman's inscriptions show he was a follower of Tantric Buddhism. He ruled until at least 1375, which is when his last known inscription was made. He was also called the Lord of Suravasa. The name Suruaso is still used today for an area near Pagaruyung. Pagaruyung was the capital of the Minangkabau kingdom.

Adityawarman's son was named Ananggawarman.
