Adjona, also known as Adxoña or Atxoña, was a brave Guanche leader. He was a mencey, which means a king or chief, of the area called Menceyato de Abona. This was in Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands, during the time it was being conquered in the 1400s.
Adjona, the King of Abona
Adjona was an important figure in the history of Tenerife. He was the ruler of the Abona region. This area is located in the southern part of the island.
Where Did Adjona Live?
Adjona usually lived in a place called Vilaflor. This town is within the territory of Abona. Some historians, like Juan Bethencourt Alfonso, believe his main home was near the modern town of El Rio in Arico.
Peace During the Conquest
In 1490, Adjona made a peace agreement. He signed it with Pedro de Vera, who was the governor of Gran Canaria. Later, in 1494, he confirmed this agreement with Alonso Fernández de Lugo. This happened soon after Lugo first arrived on Tenerife.
Adjona's region, Abona, joined the "bando de paces." This means the "peace party" during the conquest. They chose to make peace instead of fighting.
After this, Adjona traveled to Spain with Lugo. He was presented to the Catholic Monarchs, who were the king and queen of Spain at the time. Other menceys also went with him. Because he was part of the peace party, Adjona returned to Tenerife. He then became part of the new society that was forming on the island. He passed away before the year 1507.
