Adligenswil is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Canton of Lucerne in Switzerland. It's found east of the city of Lucerne and shares a border with the canton of Schwyz.

Geography of Adligenswil
Adligenswil is a spread-out community located on the north side of the Würzenbach river valley. About 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) to the southwest, this river flows into Lake Lucerne. The western part of the town's land drains into the Ron valley.
The main part of Adligenswil sits in a dip between two hills, Mount Dietschiberg and Mount Dottenberg. Other smaller areas within the municipality include Stuben, on the western edge, and Dottenberg, on the slope of the hill with the same name.
Land Use in Adligenswil
Adligenswil covers an area of about 7 square kilometers (2.7 square miles). A large part of this land, about 54.5%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 24.3% of the area. The remaining land is mostly settled, meaning it has buildings or roads (19.5%), or it's non-productive land like rivers (1.7%).
The towns that border Adligenswil are Dierikon to the north, Udligenswil to the northeast, Küssnacht to the east, Meggen to the south, Lucerne to the southwest, and Ebikon to the northwest.
History of Adligenswil
Adligenswil was first mentioned in historical records in the year 1210. Back then, it was known by its older name, Adalgeswile. For a long time, until the 1200s, Adligenswil and the areas nearby were controlled by Lucerne and an abbey (a type of monastery) from Alsace called Murbach Abbey.
In 1291, Lucerne came under the control of the Habsburgs, a powerful European family. However, their power slowly decreased after important battles like the Battle of Morgarten (1315) and the Battle of Sempach (1386). By 1406, Lucerne gained full control over the area known as the "Vogtei," which included Adligenswil. Adligenswil became its own separate church parish in 1861.
Population of Adligenswil
Adligenswil has a population of about 5,500 people (as of 2022). In 2007, about 8.6% of the people living here were from other countries. Over the past ten years, the population has grown quite a bit, by about 19.4%. Most people in Adligenswil speak German (93.6%). A smaller number speak French (0.9%) or Italian (0.9%).
For a long time, until the late 1900s, almost everyone in Adligenswil was Roman Catholic. As of the year 2000, about 64.3% of the people were Roman Catholic, and 20% were Protestant. A small number of people belonged to other Christian faiths or were Muslim. About 9.66% of the population did not belong to any organized religion.
How the Population Grew
From 1798 until 1970, the number of people living in Adligenswil grew very slowly, from 433 to 953 residents. This meant Adligenswil stayed mostly a farming village. But starting in the 1970s, many new buildings were constructed, and the population began to grow much faster, especially after 1975.

Economy in Adligenswil
Over the last ten years, fewer people in Adligenswil work in farming. The biggest employers in the town used to be the printing company Ringier and a company called DemoScope, which studied what people thought (market research). DemoScope is now closed.
Adligenswil has a low unemployment rate, around 1.56%. In 2005, about 89 people worked in the primary economic sector (like farming), and there were about 26 businesses in this area. About 646 people worked in the secondary sector (like manufacturing), with 44 businesses. The largest number, 608 people, worked in the tertiary sector (like services), with 133 businesses.
Many people who live in Adligenswil travel to other towns for work. For example, 1,933 locals commute out of Adligenswil, with more than half (51.8%) going to Lucerne. Only 897 people, mostly from nearby towns, commute into Adligenswil for work.
