Adnan Badran was born in Jerash, Jordan, on December 15, 1935. At that time, Jerash was part of a region called the Emirate of Transjordan, which was under the British Empire. His parents were from Palestine.
He studied science in the United States. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Science, from Oklahoma State University in 1959. Later, he received his Master of Science and PhD degrees from Michigan State University in 1963. Adnan Badran's brother, Mudar Badran, was also a well-known politician in Jordan and served as prime minister several times.
A Career in Science and Government
Adnan Badran has had an impressive career, combining his love for science with public service.
Leading Science and Education
In 1987, Badran became the first Secretary General of Jordan's Higher Council for Science and Technology. This important council helps guide scientific progress in the country. Its president was Prince Hassan bin Talal.
He also served briefly as the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of Education in the late 1980s. During the 1990s, he became the president of the Arab Academy of Sciences. He also led the Philadelphia University of Jordan. From 1994 to 1998, he worked as the deputy director of UNESCO. UNESCO is a special agency of the United Nations that promotes education, science, and culture around the world.
Time as Prime Minister
King Abdullah II appointed Adnan Badran as Prime Minister on April 7, 2005. The new government aimed to bring about more reforms in Jordan. Badran also took on the role of defense minister at that time.
However, after about seven months, he and his government resigned. This happened because reforms were moving slowly. Also, the country faced a difficult time after the tragic hotel bombings in Amman on November 9, 2005.
Continuing Academic Work
After his time as Prime Minister, Badran continued his work in education. He was the president of Petra University. In September 2014, he became the Chancellor at the university. He also served as the president of Yarmouk University.
Adnan Badran is a Fellow and a former Vice-President of The World Academy of Sciences. This organization helps advance science in developing countries. In July 2009, he co-published the UNESCO Science Report 2010 on the Arab States.
He has received several special honors called Honorary Doctorates. These were from Sungkyunkwan University (1981), Michigan State University (2007), and Yarmouk University (2014). He has written 120 publications, including 22 books, and holds 4 patents.
