Adolfo Rivadeneyra (born April 10, 1841, in Santiago, Chile – died February 5, 1882, in Madrid, Spain) was a Spanish diplomat, expert on the Middle East, editor, and traveler. He was known for his amazing journeys and for publishing important Spanish books.

Adolfo Rivadeneyra's Life Story

Adolfo Rivadeneyra was the son of a famous Spanish printer and publisher named Manuel Rivadeneyra. Adolfo followed in his father's footsteps in some ways, but he also had a very exciting career as a diplomat.

A Diplomat's Adventures

A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. Adolfo started his diplomatic work in Beirut, a city in the Middle East. He was a very talented interpreter because he spoke many languages fluently. These included English, French, Italian, German, Persian, Turkish, and several types of Arabic.

He worked in many different places around the world:

  • He was an Acting Consul in Jerusalem. A consul helps citizens from their home country who are living or traveling abroad.
  • He served as a Vice-Consul in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Damascus (Syria), and Tehran (Iran).
  • Later, he became a Consul in Mogador (Morocco) and Singapore.

Adolfo finished his work as a diplomat in 1879.

Learning and Publishing

Adolfo was also very involved in the cultural world of Spain. He was chosen to be a member of the Royal Academy of History. This is a very important group that studies Spanish history. He also became the secretary of the Geographical Society of Madrid.

While he was in Damascus, he began to study the ancient Assyrian language. He learned from his teacher and friend, Francisco García Ayuso.

Adolfo also continued his father's work as a publisher. He kept publishing a famous series of classic Spanish books called Biblioteca de Autores Españoles. On top of all this, he wrote several books about his own exciting travels throughout the East.

Adolfo Rivadeneyra wrote books about his travels, sharing his adventures with others.

  • Viaje de Ceylan a Damasco. Golfo Pérsico. Mesopotamia. Ruinas de Babilonia, Nínive y Palmira (Journey from Ceylon to Damascus. Persian Gulf. Mesopotamia. Ruins of Babylon, Nineveh and Palmyra). This book was published in Madrid in 1871. It describes his travels through places like the Persian Gulf and ancient cities.
  • Viaje al interior de Persia (Journey to the Interior of Persia). This book was published in three parts in 1880. It tells the story of his travels deep into Persia (modern-day Iran).
