Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez (born September 17, 1915 – died July 8, 2011) was a famous Spanish-born Mexican philosopher, writer, and professor. He was born in Algeciras, a city in Andalucia, Spain.

Life and Ideas

Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez studied philosophy at the University of Madrid. In 1939, he moved to Mexico. This happened after the Spanish Civil War ended, when many thinkers and artists left Spain. He had been involved in the war as an editor for a youth publication.

Becoming a Professor

In 1959, Sánchez Vázquez became a full-time philosophy professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. This is a very important university. He taught there for many years and was named a professor emeritus in 1985. This title is given to retired professors who are highly respected. He also received special honorary degrees from other universities.

His Philosophy

Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez was interested in Marxism. This is a way of thinking about society, economics, and politics. However, he had his own unique ideas about it. He believed in an open and critical way of looking at Marxism, not a strict or old-fashioned one.

His fresh ideas were similar to those of the Frankfurt School, another group of thinkers. For example, his book The Philosophy of Praxis came out around the same time as Herbert Marcuse's One Dimensional Man. Sánchez Vázquez also had strong views on ethics, which is about what is right and wrong. He disagreed with very strict rules in ethics.
