Adolph, Count of Oldenburg (born before 1463 – died 17 February 1500) was a ruler known as a Count of Oldenburg. He held this position from 1482 until his death.

Life of Adolph

Early Life and Becoming Count

Adolph was the oldest son of Gerhard VI, Count of Oldenburg. His father, Gerhard VI, was a count who ruled the area of Oldenburg. In 1482, Gerhard VI had to give up his power. This happened because he was defeated by groups called the Frisians and the forces from the Bishopric of Münster.

After his father stepped down, Adolph took over as the head of the county of Oldenburg. He ruled alongside his younger brother, John V.

Capture and Release

In November 1483, Adolph was captured by the Frisians. He was held captive for a few years. In October 1486, the fighting stopped, and Adolph was finally set free. To get him back, a payment of 3,500 florins was made. A florin was a type of gold coin used back then.

Life After Release

Even after Adolph was released, his brother John V continued to manage the county's government. Adolph accepted this and chose to focus on military actions.

He joined his other brother, Otto, in a military campaign. They fought with Duke Magnus I of Saxe-Lauenburg against the Frisians who lived in Wursten. This area was home to free farmers but was loosely controlled by the Prince-Archbishopric of Bremen. This campaign did not succeed in 1499. It failed because Prince-Archbishop John III had built a strong group of allies to defend the area.

Final Battle and Death

The next year, in 1500, Adolph and Otto took part in another war. This time, they fought against the people of Dithmarses. They were part of the army led by their cousin, King John of Denmark.

Sadly, both Adolph and Otto died on 17 February 1500. This happened during a major battle called the Battle of Hemmingstedt. The Danish army, which they were fighting with, lost this battle.
