Adrian Arrington: Football Star

Growing Up and High School Football

Adrian Arrington grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He went to Washington High School there. During his high school football career, he was a very busy player. He caught 100 passes for 1,547 yards and scored 23 touchdowns. Touchdowns are worth points in football.

He also returned 24 kickoffs for 642 yards. A kickoff is how a game or half starts. He returned 38 punt returns for 442 yards too. A punt return happens when a player catches a punted ball. On defense, he made 11 interceptions and 95 tackles. An interception is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an opponent. A tackle is when a player stops an opponent.

In 2004, Arrington played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. This is a special game for top high school players. He was also named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Iowa. This award goes to outstanding athletes.

College Days at Michigan

Arrington played college football for the Michigan Wolverines.

Freshman and Sophomore Years

In 2004, his first year, Arrington played in eight games. He caught two passes for 12 yards. In 2005, his second year, he played in only one game. He then got injured and could not play more. Because of this, he was able to "redshirt" for the season. Redshirting means a player can take a year off from playing but still keep their college eligibility. This gave him an extra year to play in 2008.

Junior and Senior Seasons

In 2006, as a junior, Arrington played in all 13 games. He started five games as a wide receiver. He was second on the team with 40 catches. He also scored eight touchdowns, which was second best. He gained 544 receiving yards, placing him third on the team. In the 2007 Rose Bowl, he caught four passes for 34 yards. One of these catches was for a touchdown.

In 2007, his senior year, Arrington had 58 catches for 729 yards. He scored six touchdowns. He was second on the team in all these areas, behind Mario Manningham. In his final game for Michigan, he had a great performance. He caught nine passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. This helped Michigan win against Florida in the 2008 Capital One Bowl.

After the 2007 season, Arrington decided to enter the 2008 NFL draft. This meant he would not use his extra year of college eligibility.

Joining the New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints chose Arrington in the 2008 NFL draft. He was the 237th player picked overall. The Saints even traded a future draft pick to get him. On July 18, 2008, he signed a contract with the team. However, he was placed on injured reserve for the 2008 season. This happened because of a toe injury he got during a preseason game. Injured reserve means a player cannot play for the season.

Super Bowl Win and Later Years

In 2009, Arrington spent the regular season on the Saints' practice squad. A practice squad is a group of players who train with the team but are not on the main roster. On January 20, 2010, he was moved to the active roster. This was before the NFC Championship Game. He did not play in that game, but the Saints went on to win Super Bowl XLIV. This means Arrington was part of a Super Bowl-winning team!

He was later released by the Saints but re-signed to the practice squad. In December, he was moved back to the active roster. In 2012, Arrington had surgery on his knee. He was not able to play in any preseason games. Even with his injury, he made the team's regular season roster. He was cut from the team on September 8, but then added back on September 10. He was later placed on injured reserve again.
