Mario Cashmere Manningham (born May 25, 1986) is a former American football player. He played as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL). Mario was a star college player at the University of Michigan. The New York Giants picked him in the 2008 NFL draft. He helped the Giants win Super Bowl XLVI, making a very important catch in the final minutes. Mario also played for the San Francisco 49ers.
College Football Career
Starting at Michigan
Mario Manningham played college football for the University of Michigan. In 2005, as a freshman, he caught 27 passes for 433 yards. He also scored six touchdowns. One of his most exciting plays was a game-winning touchdown catch against Penn State in October 2005. This catch happened as time ran out in the game.
Key Moments in College
In 2006, Mario had 38 catches for 703 yards and nine touchdowns. He was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week two times in a row. This happened after great games against Notre Dame and Wisconsin. Later that season, he had knee surgery. He returned to play in November.
Mario's best college season was in 2007. He caught 72 passes for 1,174 yards and 12 touchdowns. Because of his amazing performance, he was named a second-team All-American.
After the 2007 season, Mario decided to enter the NFL draft early. He finished his college career with 137 catches for 2,310 yards and 27 touchdowns. These numbers put him among the top players in Michigan's history.
Professional Football Career
Joining the New York Giants
The New York Giants chose Mario Manningham in the third round of the 2008 NFL draft. He was the 95th player picked overall. Mario signed a four-year contract with the Giants. He made his first catch in an NFL game on October 5, 2008. The Giants won that game against the Seattle Seahawks 44–6.
Making an Impact in 2009
In 2009, Mario worked on his skills as a punt returner. He started the 2009 season strong. He caught three passes for 58 yards and a touchdown in the Giants' first game. They won 23–17 against the Washington Redskins. In the next game, he had 10 catches for 150 yards. He also made an amazing juggling catch for a touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys. Mario became a starting wide receiver after another player, Domenik Hixon, got injured.
Strong Performance in 2010
Mario played in all 16 games for the Giants in the 2010 season. In one game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he caught eight passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns. The next week, he had four catches for 132 yards and a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers. In the last game of the season, he caught four passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. For the whole 2010 season, he had 60 catches for 944 yards and nine touchdowns.
Super Bowl XLVI Champion in 2011
In the 2011 regular season, Mario had 39 catches for 523 yards and four touchdowns. He scored a touchdown in three games in a row during Weeks 8-10.
On February 5, 2012, Mario made a legendary catch in Super Bowl XLVI. This catch helped the Giants win against the New England Patriots. With less than four minutes left, the Giants were losing by two points. Their quarterback, Eli Manning, threw a long pass down the sideline. Mario caught it and managed to keep his feet in bounds by a tiny bit. This amazing 38-yard catch set up the winning score. The Giants went on to beat the Patriots 21–17. Mario finished the Super Bowl with five catches for 73 yards.
Time with the San Francisco 49ers
Joining the 49ers
Mario Manningham signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers on March 22, 2012. He made his first appearance for the 49ers on September 9. This was in the season opener against the Green Bay Packers. He had four catches in their 30–22 victory. On October 7, he scored his first touchdown as a 49er. It was a 10-yard catch from quarterback Alex Smith.
Injury and Recovery
On December 23, 2012, Mario suffered a serious knee injury. He tore his ACL and PCL in a game against the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers announced that he would miss the rest of the season. Even without Mario, the 49ers reached Super Bowl XLVII. However, they lost to the Baltimore Ravens 34–31.
Mario spent much of 2013 recovering from his injury. He was placed on a special list for players who are physically unable to perform. He returned to play on November 4, 2013. After playing in a few games, he was placed on the injured reserve list again in December. He finished the 2013 season with nine catches for 85 yards.
Returning to the Giants
On March 18, 2014, Mario Manningham signed a one-year contract to return to the New York Giants. However, he strained his calf in the last preseason game. He was then placed on injured reserve and later released by the Giants.
