Marie Adrienne Françoise de Noailles, also known as Madame de La Fayette, was an important French noblewoman. She was born in Paris, France, on November 2, 1759. Her family was very powerful. She married Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, a famous general who helped America win its independence. They had four children together. Adrienne was known for her strength and courage, especially during the difficult times of the French Revolution. She passed away on December 24, 1807.
Family Life and Children
Marie Adrienne was born into the powerful Noailles family. Her home was the grand Hôtel de Noailles in Paris. She was the second daughter of the Duke of Ayen.
On April 11, 1774, she married Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette. The wedding took place in the chapel of her family home. For the first few years of their marriage, they lived there. They had four children together:
- Adrienne Henriette Catherine Charlotte du Motier (1775-1777): She was their first child but sadly died very young.
- Anastasie Louise Pauline Motier du Motier (1777-1863): She grew up and married Jules César Charles de Fay, Count of La Tour Maubourg.
- George Washington Louis Gilbert du Motier (1779-1849): Their only son was named after the famous American leader, George Washington. He married Émilie d'Estutt de Tracy.
- Marie Antoinette Virginie du Motier (1782-1849): Their youngest daughter was named in honor of Queen Marie Antoinette. She married Louis de Lasteyrie du Saillant, Marquis of Lasteyrie.
