Where is Adugak Island?

Adugak Island is about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) long. It is located about 8 kilometers (5 miles) off the northwest coast of Umnak Island. The island reaches a height of about 31 meters (102 feet) above the sea. The waters around Adugak Island can be very dangerous for ships. This is because there are many rocks hidden just below the water's surface.

Animals on Adugak Island

Adugak Island is a special protected area for Steller sea lions. A protected area like this is called a rookery. Steller sea lions are an endangered animal, which means there are not many left. During the winter, these sea lions are seen eating fish in the nearby waters.

A type of bird called the Cassin's auklet used to live here. However, these birds are no longer found on Adugak Island. They also disappeared from other islands in the Aleutians. This happened because of animals that were brought to the islands and hunted them.
